Welcome to Nic & Elle’s in Ashfield

The race was on

With their first baby on the way, Nic & Elle had a very real deadline (birthline?) to get their house in order. As one of those long, two-storey townhouses common to Ashfield, their place was dark and squashy. Not quite compatible with the demands of a newborn bub.

“We’d long wanted to freshen up our home. We foresaw us spending lots more time in the kitchen and laundry. And in need of tonnes more storage.”

— Nic & Elle

Ready, steady, go!

After many chats, Tommico undertook a full renovation of Nic & Elle’s kitchen, laundry, powder room, flooring and cabinetry. A big piece of work was removing a major wall to de-gloom the kitchen and open it up into the dining room. The other was building new walls downstairs, to split the garage from the bedroom and stairway.

“We engaged with a team of structural engineers to oversee the removal of the old wall and installation of the new ones. The new layout gives Nic & Elle so much more freedom and light.”

— Steve & Lisa, Tommico

The curveball

Every project has one. For Nic & Elle’s, it was the unsightly vermiculite ceiling they wanted to cover up. But doing so conventionally would’ve made the head height untenable. So we innovated, by installing very thin metal ceiling battens that were gyprocked to keep milimetres within regulation heights.

The finish line was in sight

Outside, we designed a family-friendly garden and backyard, first levelling the terrain and installing astroturf, then building a retaining wall for a garden bed that snaked around the yard – plus a pergola and decking of soft yellow tallowwood. Inside, the final fittings and pops of colour give Nic & Elle’s home light and levity.

“We’re overjoyed. Tommico were collaborative and communicative, and everything was delivered on time. The only thing that wasn’t on time was our baby! He came out 3 weeks early.”
